Our guide books of the west country were the brain-child of photographer Paul Savage and freelance writer John Burgess.

Friends and Colleagues for many years they have worked together on numerous projects. Their Collaboration to produce this range of beautiful guide books and companion pocket books has truly been ‘ a labour of love ‘ involving hundreds of hours of painstaking dedicated work. All of the books bring a fresh ‘ new look ‘ of the west country in both words and pictures.

John Burgess is a true countryman and well qualified to write these Illustrated Guides to the West Country, for he knows and loves the region well, having both lived and worked there throughout most of his life.

He was born in Somerset to a farming family and grew up in the Quantock Hills, where he firmly believes his love of the countryside was nurtured. ‘ All my life has been enriched by the countryside it’s where I grew up. ‘

He has enjoyed a varied career, never far removed from the country way of life. For a number of years he was , as he wryly reflects, ‘ privileged ‘ to work on Exmoor for the National Park Authority in a wonderful job which took him out and about all over the moor.

Prior to his retirement he was a freelance radio journalist and producer with the BBC for over 20 years, where he produced features, mainly about the countryside, for various programmes including ‘ Farming Today ‘ and the popular Radio 4 programme - ‘ A Small Country Living ‘.

Through working for local radio in the south west he was able to delve deeply into the area and unearth a host of fascinating aspects of the region many of which feature in our Illustrated Guide Books of this beautiful corner of England.

Professional photographer Paul Savage has enjoyed a lifetime in photography which took him to many far flung corners of the world.

When his worldwide travels ended he made Somerset his home and workplace. ‘ My wife and I fell in love with the County, especially the delightful Quantock Hills more than forty-five years ago. We loved it then and we still do today ‘.

The natural Beauty of Somerset and the entire west country has long been at the heart of Paul’s photographic Work.

Paul was born in Rutland, Englands smallest and arguably, prettiest County where his photographic career began.

He was brought up to cherish the countryside around him and to love every season of the year.

This childhood bond with the English countryside has never left him and is the inspiration for much of his photographic work.

Paul Has a natural instinct for what makes a ‘ good photograph ‘ and all his images have that extra special ‘ something ‘ which evoke a mood, a sentiment or just sheer delight.
